The Looting of the Iraq Museum, Baghdad
and Chicago Book Treats

Book Review

Timely, moving, historical -"The Looting of the Iraq Museum, Baghdad" edited by Milbry Polk and Angela M. H. Schuster (Abrams, $35.00, 242 pages) in words and images is in book form a reconstruction of the treasures of one of the most important museums in the world, one that was broken into and looted in April 2003.

Page after page, chapter after chapter, written by international archaeologists, who labored for years excavating in Iraq,  a nation of firsts - earliest cities and villages, writing, poetry and epic literature, and more.   A peek into what had been in the Iraq Museum in Baghdad is insight into how civilization started and evolved.  This is an important book.

On a lighter note from Lake Claremont Press in Chicago and with the White Sox making history comes "A Natives' Guide to Chicago,"  "A Cook's Guide to Chicago," The Street and San Man's Guide to Chicago Eats" by Dennis Foley and "Chicago Haunts" by Ursula Bielski.  Taken as a quartette, these books are fascinating reads and references works for locals as well as visitors. NOTABLE:  "Anthony and the Magic Picture Frame" by Michael S. Class, MagicPictureFrame.com $35.00. 225 pages) is a remarkable and inventive book that showcases 12-year-old Anthony who  travels back in history and plays baseball with Lou Gehrig, walks on the moon with Neil Armstrong, speaks with survivors of the holocaust, etc., etc. Each chapter provides a moral lesson worth noting.
