January 2006 Excellent Reads
Book Review

  • Vincent Van Gogh: The Drawings ( Yale University Press, $65.00, 392 pages)
  • A Little History of the World by E. H. Gombrich, (Yale University Press, $35.00)
  • Angel’s World by Michael Lesy, (Norton, $35.00, 127 pages)
  • 1001 Golf Holes You Must Play Before You Die (Ronnie Sellers Productions, $34.95, 960 pages)

The wide range of quality books served up today by publishers is truly amazing. There seems a book for every taste, a book for every budget. All we need is more room on our coffee tables or bookcases to house them all.

Vincent Van Gogh: The Drawings is a truly beautiful book showcasing 120 works by the great artist. We are there with him as he worked in ink, graphite, watercolor and diluted oils.  This is a book that truly brings back a time and a place and preserves it for all time for all those who are interested in one of the most important of self taught artists.

The international best seller A Little History of the World  can be thought of a true fairy tale about how mankind has evolved. As the book’s press release notes: E.H. Gombrich was a “writer of panoramic erudition.”  That he was, telling, in 40 short and beautifully crafted chapters, the story of man.

Angel’s World  is one of the most unusual of books. Author/photo historian  Michael Lesy went through an archive of more than 60,000 images left to the Library of Congress by Angelo Rizzuto. The result is this book, sad, compelling, arresting collection of 97 duotone  photographs left by the photographer who called himself Angel, who left a run down apartment (even though he had a townhouse on Manhattan’s East Side) every day at two in the afternoon to photograph New York City, New Yorkers and himself. If you have any interest in photography or New York, this book is a must have.

1001 Golf Holes You Must Play Before You Die  contains more than 650 full color photos of great golf holes around the globe. All of these holes are historic and challenging venues – and the terrific tome more than does than justice. There are 18 chapters with each one dedicated to that hole number, how to play it and what it is like. This is a book for all golfers –all sports fans. Remarkable.

NOTABLE: The Official 2006 Sports Fanatic’s Walmanac  (800 625-3386, Ronnie Sellers Productions) is a must for those who want to know the date and also get all kinds of fascinating sports trivia.
