“Moonshot,” And Other Lovely
Spring Reads
Book Review
The Children's
Book Review
All kinds, all sizes, all subjects, all for children
- the books of spring 2009 have it all. Four really terrific ones are
available now for youngsters or not so youngsters who will be doing the
reading to other youngsters.
“Moonshot” by Brian Floca (Atheneum, $17.99, ) is a
wonder of a book for a new generation of readers. The Story of Apollo 11
and the heroes and now legendary astronauts is vividly explained in
wonderful imagery and carefully chosen prose.
“The Underneath” by Kathi Appelt with drawings by
David Small (Atheneum, $16.99,) has a focus on a calico cat and hound
who stay in the underneath of the forest and prevail over man and
beast. Magical, musical, highly recommended.
From Dutton comes “Riki’s Birdhouse” by Monica
Wellington ($16.99) and “Tigger’s Giant” ($9.99)inspired by A.A. Milne
and with visuals after the style of Ernest H. Shepard. Both books have
an innocence, a sense of wonder about them. Both books are beautifully
illustrated and cleverly and entertainingly written. “Tigger’s Giant”
has what is called “over 80 fun flaps to open.”
