Publisher: Workman Publishing Company
With facts, figures, charts and trivia
filling its 504 pages, The NFL 2000 Record and Fact Book is a treasure
lode of almost everything pro football fans would want to know about the
Among the many items are team and
individual statistics and records, career coaching records, all-time team-vs.-team
results, the 75th anniversary team, the Super Bowl silver anniversary
team, the 2000 NFL draft summary and a listing of Pro Football Hall of
An especially appealing feature is the
chronological history of pro football from 1869 to the birth of the NFL in
1920 to the 2000 Super Bowl victory of the St.
Louis Rams. All NFL commissioners and presidents are listed in the
chronology. For trivia buffs: The president in 1920 was Jim Thorpe.
Team directories provide a concise and
clearly laid-out overview of each NFL franchise. For example, I was able
to get the whole range and evolution of coaching history for each team at
a glance. One also is able to get at a glance vital data on each team:
record-holders (individual and career), club officials, mini-profiles of
each member of the coaching staff, etc.
Just when you thought The Record and
Fact Book had given you all the pro football information you would ever
need, you come to page 365 and a list of NFL international games (the
first one was Aug. 12, 1950 in Ottawa, Canada -- the New
York Giants against the Ottawa Rough Riders).
And there on page 369 is a list of Monday Night Football results,
going back to the show's origin in 1970. It makes for fascinating
Originally published solely for the
league's front-office personnel, coaches and teams, The Record and Fact
Book later was made available to the media. For the past 20 years, the
general public has been able to purchase the book as well.
The NFL 2000 Record and Fact Book is a
work that belongs close by throughout all the days and nights of the new
NFL season. It is the definitive source.
"The Man in the Dugout," by
noted author Leonard Koppett (Temple University Press, 368 pp., $29.50),
is an expanded edition of a book originally published in 1992. It is a
brilliant look at why and how baseball's top managers got that way.
"Scuba Diving," by Karen
Berger (W.W. Norton & Company, 224 pp., $18.95) is a comprehensive
diving guide providing tips and data on the underwater sport. There are
many illustrations and charts in this highly informative, manual-type
