Picture Perfect Christmas Getaway
mweb-bw.gif (14785 bytes) By Michael Webb

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. That is the dream of many a couple for Christmas.

If you want a winter wonderland, Norman Rockwell, romantic Christmas, then Portland Maine might be just what you are searching for.

Portland won’t promise a snowy December, but chances are the flakes will be falling, adding just the perfect touch to what is already a beautiful Christmas setting. Downtown Portland gets all decked out in its green and red attire and twinkle lights ablaze on the century old buildings in the Historic Old Port District that are bustling with shoppers and diners.

If you fancy, you can catch an old-fashioned sleigh ride through the streets and be serenaded by carolers. The town puts on a very professional Nutcracker ballet and “A Christmas Carol” which makes the holiday experience feel complete.

Here are some of my personal recommendations:

Shopping:

Honestly, Athena and I aren’t into shopping. But DUNNE ROMAN
at 428 FORE ST in downtown Portland is more like an experience than a store. The smells, the sights and sights are evocative.

Dining:

Barbara’s Kitchen and Café (388 Cottage Rd, South Portland 207-767-6313 – www.barbaraskitchen.com). A very cozy restaurant – with an impressive menu.

Rachel’s Wood Grill (90 Exchange St. 207-774-1192). Perhaps the most romantic downtown.

Lodgings:

Inn by the Sea sits on Cape Elizabeth and is about 10 minutes out of the city. The inn has 43 one and two bedroom suites. (207-799-3134)
Black Point Inn is a Historic Hotels of America property that has been a favorite getaway for 123 years. It is minutes away from downtown, over-looking the Maine coast. (207-883-2500)
