Book Review

From William Morrow comes another page turner a New York Times Best Selling author  – J. A. Jance “Betrayal of Trust” ($25.99, 344 pages). The Jance book (a new Beaumont series novel) features the most potent woman in Washington State who is unable to escape the horrible truth that is uncovered by J.P. Beaumont and sidekick Mel Soames. A mesmerizing read.

“Sisters of the Sari” by Brenda L. Baker (NAL, $15.00, 330 pages) makes for really enjoyable summer reading. Set in urban south India, it is about an unlikely pair – a “type A” U.S. exec and an ex-slave who resides in Chennai.  Vivid and touching - a breakout first novel.

BOOKENDS: From National Geographic Publishers comes “10 Best of Everything National Parks” ($21.95, 480 pages) and “100 Countries 5000 Ideas” $26.95, 400 pages). Both are terrific source books. Part reference, part encyclopedia, part books of lists, part travel guide, part browser - - -these worthies belong in your bookcase.

“Kaufman Field Guide to Advanced Birding” by Kenn Kaufman (HMH, $21.00, 447 pages) is not for everyone but it might be. It is one for the birds and those interested in them and is a glorious guide to understanding what you see and hear. Kaufman, one of the world’s leading bird experts shows why he is.
