Queensland, Australia: Fifties recording star Perry Como vowed it would take more than a pack of wild horses to keep him away from the one he loved. Today at the Hyatt Regency Coolum the thrill of romance is still present, but then so are the ducks and swans that glide languidly along the resort's lakes and waterways.
Sunlit climate and easygoing pace of Queensland's Sunshine Coast
Before you say that all Hyatts are alike, you'd better take another look at this one. Set among 370 vast acres, the Hyatt Regency Coolum is a one of a kind sophisticated retreat with an 18-hole golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., seven lighted tennis courts, nine swimming pools, fine dining, beach club, and a mile of ocean surf.
Now add a touch of the extraordinary - a top Australian spa with 130 health and beauty treatments waiting to soothe the mind and body.
Luxury veranda dining
Call it adventure chic, but once you combine the vacation spot's sheer beauty against a background of nature, you'll see why the Hyatt Regency Coolum is, for lack of a better phrase, cool. And that goes for the business traveler as well.
With service including fiber optic cabling, thirty ISDN lines and video conferencing from all meeting rooms, you'll be done in plenty of time to enjoy all the hotel's amenities.
If you're wondering how easy it is to get there, the Brisbane airport is an hour's drive. Better yet, the nearby Sunshine Coast Airport is just minutes down the road. Either way, you'll be in the heart of Queensland and specifically in the Sunshine Coast known for its sunlit climate and easygoing pace.
My recommendation is a stay at the Ambassador's Club Villas and Residence. This is Hyatt Regency's two-story luxury duplex set amongst natural bushland and rainforest. My fourteen-year-old daughter gave it a thumb's up when she saw the Italian marble bathroom with Jacuzzi, and enjoyed the fact that we had our own washer-dryer. But then household chores melted once she met her "hot" tennis instructor, and requested more lessons during our stay. Her mom, meanwhile, headed for the spa.
Masque Away Your Troubles at The Spa at the Hyatt Regency Coolum
Without a doubt, spa mavens will be ecstatic with all the pampering at reasonable prices. For example, a Body Peel and Herbal Bath cost $38.00; a Lymphatic Draining Massage is $28.00. Rejuvenate with a Heavenly Skin Reviver for just $19.00, or test your cholesterol for only $4.00. Add a dollar and you'll be able to partake in a Yoga/Tai Chi/Belly Dancing session.
With over one hundred beauty and health regimens including hairdressing and tanning, The Spa at Hyatt Regency Coolum doesn't stop there. You can also use the heated outdoor lap pool, exercise to aqua aerobics, play squash, or relax in one of the private saunas and Jacuzzis.
And now possums, as the celebrated Aussie Dame Edna would say, why not park the kids at Camp Hyatt (ages six months to seventeen years), while you head off to the trendy resort town of Noosa known for its shops and fine dining. Our favorite was Lindoni's Ristorante Italiano. Our extra added treat was the arrival of Sian the Magician. Suddenly my teenager dropped her blasť demeanor and couldn't believe he knew what cards she was holding in her hand. "Cool," she said.

United offers direct, non-stop service from San Francisco and Los Angeles to Sydney. This is in contrast to other carriers that stop first in Asia. If you have frequent flier miles on United, you might want to cash them in, as the ride is fourteen and one-half hours going over, and twelve and one-half hours coming home.
