Arizona certainly has its share of beautiful resorts – from the opulent Phoenician to the gorgeous Royal Palms Resort, there is no want for places to stay in the Scottsdale area. However, if you are looking to stay in an authentic casita just outside the city, look no further than The Wigwam Golf Resort & Spa.
The retreat was built in 1918 as a retreat for visiting executives from the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. The property opened to the public in 1929 and today features 331 Southwestern casita-style guestrooms over 75 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens. It’s located just 25 minutes from Phoenix’s Sky Harbor Airport. The property has just had a $20 million facelift and now features oversize guest rooms, a Red Door Spa, high end steakhouse and improvements to its two golf courses. The rooms here are large with Southwestern décor and most offer a patio.
The Wigwam opened Red’s Steakhouse in March 2007 and offers a menu that includes prime steaks, chops, chicken and seafood dishes. The 90-seat dining room offers two private dining areas and an exclusive wine cellar. The restaurant received its name from V.O. “Red” Allen, the Wigwam’s original golf professional and first of three generations from the Allen family to lead the resort’s golf program. Be sure to check out the pictures of Red Allen and his golfing career, which line the restaurant’s walls.
“Although many of the menu items appear to be steakhouse standards at first glance, the difference is in the quality,” said John Garcia, chef de cuisine for Red’s. “We have the finest cuts of meat in the Valley. Dry aging the beef brings out a unique, earthy flavor that many people enjoy. However, if you prefer the juicy tenderness of a filet or bone-in cut, we offer that too.”
Summertime at the Wigwam is one of the best times to visit the property if you can deal with temperatures in excess of 100 degrees. But the deals here can’t be beat - rates start at just $139 per night, which is more than 75 percent off the regular winter rate.
Sit back, relax and rent a luxury cabana for the day, which includes 10 percent off all food and beverages, two reserved lounge chairs, fresh fruit, newspaper, bottled water, a phone line and sun products.
The newly constructed 26,000 square foot Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa is just an added bonus. There are five private facial rooms, six massage rooms, four state-of-the-art deluxe wet rooms, four hair stations, four manicure and five pedicure stations as well as separate men’s and women’s locker rooms, relaxation areas, a spa café, juice and elixir bar and retail boutique, a welcome addition at the property.
The signature pedicure was heavenly – a luxurious soak followed by exfoliation with a cream and sugar scrub and a warm paraffin treatment topped off the treatment. The men’s classic massage offers a traditional Swedish massage using classic techniques.
Be sure to check out the Wigwam for an authentic taste of Arizona. You’ll be happy you did.
