"Why This World" by Benjamin Moser (Oxford, $29.95,
544 pages) is a biography of Clarice Lispector, the Brazilian writer
who lived a life as interesting as the things she wrote about. This
legendary beauty made it out of the Ukraine to Brazil and worked in
the 40s as one of that country's few women journalists. Her life and
writing was influenced by Spinoza, Franz Kafka and the kabbalah and
