1948: A History of the First Arab-Israeli War

Book Review

Important. Relevant. Fascinating reading. Filled with copious research. Passionate and profound. Highly notable.

All of the above apply to Benny Morris’s “1948: A History of the First Arab-Israeli War” (Yale University Press, $32.50, 524 pages). Professor of history in the Middle East Studies Department of Ben-Gurion University, Israel, Morris is a towering presence among his nation’s “New Historians.” And this book in no small way shows why.

Offering a new and complete narrative of the war of 1948, Morris puts forward ideas that are at once controversial and at the same time illuminating about what happened. The roles of the Great   Powers at the time, the United States, Great Britain and the Soviet Union, are given up close and carefully considered evaluations.

Buttressed by new documentation, impressively organized and laid out,“1948: A History of the First Arab-Israeli War” is a groundbreaking work. For all  those interested in this subject – the book is a must. For those wanting to understand more about the  Arab-Israeli conflict – the book is required reading.

“Paris: Wish You Were Here” (Welcome Books, $24.95, 272 pages) will make you feel you are back in the City of Light all over again and if you have never been there – you will now set your sights on going. Lavish and beautiful, this  love letter of a book is filled with words and 100 color images filtered into sections like fiction and travel writing, fashion designers, song, city history, where to stay and on and on. The price is right. The book is terrific. Get yourself a copy now. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
