Airways:  A Plus, the Gem of Flight

AirTran The Airline of Choice

All is right with the world when passengers make AirTran their airlines of choice. Time after time we have taken flights on this amazing airline and have never been disappointed.

From efficient check in to careful baggage handling to affable and highly competent crews on the planes, to reasonable prices, to world’s most affordable Business Class,  AirTran has it all. And it seems its reach keeps expanding with service now to 60 cities including the new ones -  -Bermuda, Ft. Meyers in Florida.

Getting ready for taking off.

We had just  returned from a trip on AirTran to Los Angeles, Palm Springs and San Diego – out of LaGuardia Airport in New York City. And we were happy passengers in the no-frills but very satisfying Business Class where you are first on and first off the plane.  BC passengers are also comfortably nestled in side by side two seats that make up a total of a dozen comfy perches in the front of the plane. Adult and non-adult drinks and endless and healthy snacks were there for the taking. And attentive and aiming to pleasing attendants were at the ready.

Another special highlight of this trip on the outboard flight was an amiable Captain who pointed out some of the sights – the Grand Canyon, Utah National Parks, desert landmarks, Vegas. It was like old times  - - evoking the sense of wonder that airlines flights still have but are muted by shabby treatment and harried crew members. Not so with AirTran!

During a brief stopover in Milwaukee on the way from LA to NY, we got to speak to the AirTran crew who’d been attending to us all through the first leg of the journey. There was charming Lawanda Dean Griffin from Georgia with the enticing southern accent, and Keith Myron Rhodes, a charismatic personality from St. Louis. Missouri. There was also Karen -- camera and tape-recorder shy but on the stick when it came to servicing passengers.

“What do I like about the job? The diversity, all the people we have the opportunity to meet on a daily basis,” said Lawanda. “I’ve been with Air Tran four years; it’s my first flight attendant’s job after being a kindergarten teacher’s assistant for 13 years. And I love it. A senior flight attendant once told me ‘If you ever look at a flight like it’s just a flight, that’s the time to come out of it.’ And I know what she means. You have to feel you are put on this flight for a reason. It must always be like the first time.”

Keith, a senior flight attendant, had worked on other airlines but enjoys the flying experience on AirTran best of all. We were impressed with Keith’s command of a flight situation when he calmly but firmly cautioned a passenger who was standing after the plane had landed but was still taxiing.  Keith swiftly resolved a potentially disruptive situation. “I do enjoy my job, the people I work with and the passengers,” he told us.

Soon Captain Rob Wilson came aboard, another member of the AirTran team who echoed the positive sentiments of his crew. But our conversation was cut short. The co-pilot had arrived. It was time to get the show on the road.

So the next time you are ready to “get your show on the road,” don’t just knee jerk react and pick the “same same” airlines to fly with. Choose AirTran, the better way, in so many ways.
