The Children's Book Review

“To Do A Book of Alphabets and Birthdays” by Gertrude Stein (Yale University Press, 127 pages) is a winner in every way from the illustrations imaginative by Giselle Porter to the once unpublished manuscript written in 1940  by one of the top women of letters. A text only version was intelligently published in 1957 by Yale U Press and now we have this wondrous work.

“Alphabets and names makes games and everybody has a name and all the same they have in a way we have a birthday,” was the author’s explanation of her work. It is truly a collectible! MUST OWN

“Follow The Line to School” by Laura Ljungkvist (Viking) is as colorful a children’s book as one can imagine with most of the art work composed by the author’s young daughter. Full page illustrations adorn all kinds of interesting and educational questions and commentary. JUST TERRIFIC

Judy Schachner’s “Skippyjon Jones” (Dutton, $17.99) is part of the New York Times bestselling series. It is all about an uppity Siamese kitty boy who believes he is a Chihuahua. That is just part of the wacky charm of this charming book that all children will love.

“The Gingerbread Man Loose in the School” with a poster inside by Laura Murray with illustrations by Mike Lowery (Putnam,$16.99) is a delightful spin off on the classic children’s story. Incredibly enjoyable illustrations and the rhythm of bouncing rhymes make this lively book a delight.
