John Le Carre:  A Most Wanted Man

Book Review

That man of mystery and spy intrigue is at it again with “A Most Wanted Man” (Scribner, $28.00, 323 pages). John LeCarre, whose “The Spy Who Came in From the Cold” and “The Constant Gardiner” were named by “Time Magazine” as one of the 100 best novels from 1923 to the present, has another gem that belongs on that list.

A thriller, a book as timely as today’s headlines, “A Most wanted Man” brings an unlikely joining of Tommy Brue (head of a failing British bank in Hamburg,  Issa (who was smuggled into Hamburg) and Annabel who completes the strange triangle.

Written with a tone and style unmistakably LeCarre: “A Turkish heavyweight boxing champion sauntering  down a Hamburg street with his mother on his arm can scarcely be blamed failing to notice that he is being shadowed by a skinny boy in a black coat.”

That is how “A Most Wanted Man” begins and thru the twists and turns and wheelings and dealings, we are left satisfied by the power of a great novelist at work.

ATLAS OF THE WORLD”  (Oxford University Press) Annual update, now 448 pages, 11x15  with a comprehensive index of 84,000 historical entries, current world stats, is the atlas of all atlases,  Priced at just eighty bucks, containing a gazetteer of 220 countries and territories, a  48 page intro to world geography with sensational illustrations, a leather stamped and embossed cover with gilded edges  - -  this is the book for any coffee table or desk.  HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
