Annecy:  The Perfect Holiday
by

Arnie Greenberg

Imagine three days in a suite looking out on a crystal clear lake below rocky or snow covered mountains,  that seemed to reach for the clouds. At night, as the mountains darken, glittering lights flicker near the water.

It’s like living in a dream and the thousands of visitors who come here often is a testament to its beauty and serenity.

Our hotel was the Hotel Beauregard, arranged by the Tourist office,

True, it’s a touristy, overpriced place, where Swiss people come for their holidays, but I know no other place and offers as much as this once quaint town that is growing daily.

We checked into our lakeside hotel and I savoured my cold drink as I took in the spectacular view. Three star hotels have it all. There's a lift, air conditioning, parking and a covered balcony. Yes, the price is right and I look forward to a cool , June night. A walk in the busy streets of the old town was a feast for the eyes, with restaurants, bars an d parks filled with visitors from many lands. At one bridge we discovered a nice young Russian man, able to converse in English. He was one of the street artists and we got into a discussion.  Vladimir Pavleev and his wife offered art at a reasonable price and I can never say no to promising artists. What I will take home is the perfect souvenir. If you are in Annecy, you may bump into him. If not, you can go to his web site at www.vladimir-pavleev.sitew.com or write to him for ideas of his work at vladimirpavleev@orange.fr

His work will now hang on our wall.

There are guided tours of the old town or boat rides on the shinny lake. Ice cream is king and there are children everywhere. Even a slow drive around the lake is a positive event, even with bumper bumper traffic at times.

But life is strange. It’s certainly a small world. This weekend we are going to see friends in Culoz where Gertrude Stein once lived. But as we walked in the old city, we were reminded that our friend’s son; a doctor in Annecy was expecting a call from us. lo and behold, my wife looked down at a young couple, and there was the young doctor, Arnaud, having dinner with a friend. He was the only person we knew, and there he was. We'll dine with him tomorrow at our hotel

.Yes, Annecy has changed but there are so many things to remember.

One can rent a bicycle and drive as far as time permits. Annecy is also a walking city. Parking is another story.

I’ve been dreaming of this gem since my last vist. Hopefully my next holiday here will be soon.
