"Backtracked" and "The Red Blazer Girls"

The Children's Book Review

More and more books for younger readers spill out from publishers and two of the more intriguing entries are "Backtracked" and "The Red Blazer Girls."

"Backtracked" is by Pedro de Alcantara (Delacorte Press, $15.99, 256 pages ). Alcantara, a Brazilian musician, shows off his writing skills in this taut, trim ride taken on the New York City subway of Tommy Latrella -  a ride through the city through time. It is a perfect book for history buffs ages 12 and up.

"The Red Blazer Girls." By Michael D. Beil (Knopf, $16.99, 299 pages) is focused on Catholic schoolgirls who go on a scavenger hunt through Manhattan in a kind of modern day Nancy Drew experience. The hunt is filled with twists and turns as Beil, who teaches English in a Catholic High School in Manhattan, carefully and craftily unfolds this delightful book that is especially suitable for ages 8-12.
