Raves for Rizzoli Reads: “Cinelli:the Art and Design of the Bicycle,”
“The Elegant Garden” and “Audubon’s Aviary”

Loaded with incredible details, brimming with photos that truly underscore the slogan that a picture is worth more than a thousand words, this terrific trio of books from Rizzoli takes the reader on a reading, viewing, educational; and aesthetic trip through time and space.

“Cinelli:the Art and Design of the Bicycle” (with contributions by legendary riders, $55.00, 185 over-sized pages) is required reading for all biking enthusiasts tracing as it does the history of the art and craft of Cino Cinelli who began making frames and components in the 1940s. The book’s sub-title proclaims that it is all about “the art and design of the bicycle” and that it surely is.

“The Elegant Garden” by Johann Kraftner ($60.00, 432 over-sized pages) is a brilliant written and appealing photographed travel tour of architecture and landscape of the world’s finest gardens. In essence, the book is a survey of every major period of garden design. Separate chapters on gardens of the Italians, French, Chinese, English and various approaches to “gardening architecture” makes this book a landmark of the genre.

“Audubon’s Aviary” by Roberta J.M. Olson ($85.00, 448 over-sized pages) is the kind of book to leave on your coffee table or on a prominent place on your bookshelf and return to for delight and edification time and time again. As its sub-title notes it is “the original watercolors for The Birds of America.” Audubon in the early 19th century criss-crossed America creating hundreds of watercolor paintings. A selection of  435 of these formed the basis for the engraved plates of the Havell edition of the “Birds of America” (1827-1838). “Audubon’s Aviary” is a return to the mightly adventures of John James Audubon - -with new insights, documentation and explanations – this is not just a  book for bird lovers, for naturalists, but for those interested in art and nature and discovery.

Taken as a trio these definitive and carefully conceived tomes reveal the power and artistry of Rizzoli Publishing. They are for gift giving to yourself or others. GEMS ALL.
