Summer Haven, You Could Look It Up, The Art of Adapting:  Three Different and Desirable Reads

Book Reviews

As the authors of the definitive book on the Catskills - - IT HAPPENED IN THE CATSKILLS (, we looked forward to reading and reviewing  Summer Haven edited by Holli Levitsky and Phil Brown (Academic Studies Press, $69.00, 395 pages). The work did not disappoint. As its sub-title proclaims, Summer Haven focuses on the Catskills, the Holocaust and the Literary Imagination, how Jews came to America after experiencing the agony and horror of the Holocaust and experienced the unique and almost make-believe-funny and peaceful world of the Catskills. We are there through many pages of fiction, memoirs, essays, personal and general, reflections, and musings. The result is an evocation of a time and place, a way of life that belonged to history and now belongs to all of us fortunate enough to have this special book. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

You Could Look It Up by Jack Lynch (Bloomsbury, almost 500 pages) is a tome geared to a limited audience - -the reference shelf from Ancient Babylon to Wikipedia. The voluminous effort has a wide lens cast at a history of reference books throughout time, across cultures. HIGHLY INTERESTING.

The Art of Adapting by Cassandra Dunn (Touchstone, $25.00, 351 pages) is a debut novel focused on a broken family, a family caught in a certain time and place. Deftly created, tightly focused, all praise to the rookie - -Cassandra Dunn.  DELIGHFUL
