About two hours west of Boston lies one of the most spectacular resorts in Massachusetts. When Cranwell opened its 35,000 square foot spa in March, they never believed it would attract the national attention that it has.
The 380-acre resort offers a championship 18-hole golf course and the Golf Digest School directed by Keith Lyford, named one of Golf Magazine’s “Top 100 golf teachers in America.”
“Cranwell Resort and Golf Club has earned a loyal following of guests we welcome back for a wealth of reasons. Some come for the symphony, some for antiquing, some for the latest installations at MassMoCa, many for the challenges of our own golf course,” said General Manager Lew Keisler. “Often we hear first-time guests say ‘I never knew there was so much to do here! We came for the resort, but it’s so convenient to everything else we’ll have to save some things for next time.’ That’s especially true for our wedding parties and conference guests. Our new Spa will be yet another highlight for our guests to enjoy and remember.”
The new Spa Keisler is referring to offers a 60’ x 30’ heated indoor pool, large selection of massages, facial and body treatments, a fitness center, a spa café, shop and locker room “prelude suites,” complete with fireplace, sauna and steam room. It’s the largest resort in the northeast that was under construction for nearly two years. The final price tag on this gem? A mere $9 million.
What makes this spa so unique is its easy accessibility to the main estate. After getting a Swedish massage or perfect harmony facial, stroll to any of the three main guestroom buildings via glass walkways and a tunnel. The property was originally constructed in the Gilded Age and the recent renovations have maintained its old-style grandeur. Today, Cranwell offers 105 guest rooms in five buildings – the Carriage House, Founders Cottage, Olmsted Manor, Beecher’s Cottage and the Mansion (where breakfast, lunch and dinner is served daily). Fine dining is held in the main dining room with casual fare served in Sloane’s Tavern.
The Golf Digest facility features 58 acres of lesson tees with target greens for short game practice areas. “Golf Digest Schools help golfers develop the skills to play better whether you’re a low handicapper or new to the game,” said Golf Digest Schools General Manager Jim Endicott. “A true desire to help people improve is at the heart of our program and the Cranwell Resort, Spa and Golf Club, with its great practicing facility, outstanding golf course and spectacular surroundings, is an ideal location for us to operate in.”
