The Book Review: "Culture of Corruption,"
"Blood's A Rover" and "The Meaning of Life"
Headline-making, filled with all kinds of insider
information, as timely as tomorrow's news, Michelle Malkin's
"Culture of Corruption" (Regnery, $27.95, 375 pages) should be
required reading for anyone interested in what's happening in
American politics today. The sub-title is a bit harsh, but maybe
not: "Obama and His Team of Tax Cheats, Crooks and Cronies." The
peripatetic Malkin a best-selling author -- backs up her findings
with many pages of notes and much quoted material.
James Ellroy's "Blood's A Rover" (Knopf, $29, 600+
pages) is a page-turner and riveting reading by the author of "L.A.
Confidential." Political-noir that begins this way: "Los Angeles,
2/24/64 SUDDENLY: The milk truck cut a shap right turn and grazed
the the curb. The driver lost the wheel. He panic-popped the brakes.
He induced a rear-end skid. A Wells Fargo armored car clipped the
milk truck side/head-on."
And the rest is you to read. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Culled from the pages of "Esquire Magazine," "The
Meaning of Life" (Hearst Books, $22.95, 160 pages) is an oversized
look at 64 individuals who through the years have adorned the pages
of the iconic magazine. Individuals represented range from Muhammad
Ali to biologist E. O. Wilson and also include such as Al Pacino,
Jesse Jackson, Ted Williams, and Jack Lalanne.
