Especially Notable Books for Children:  "Curious George Complete Adventures Deluxe Book and CD Gift Set" and Others

The Children's Book Review

For anyone of your list, for any child, grand kid - the "Curious George Complete Adventures Deluxe Book and CD Gift Set" is a must. From Houghton Mifflin, priced at $35.00, this is a collection of five CDs with almost four hours of story recordings that complement the book. There are also seven of Margaret and H.A. Rey's original classic storybooks about "Curious George," a most beloved figure in all of children's literature.

For most of us exposure to "Curious George" has been always gratifying but also mainly in bits and pieces. It is just wonderful now to have this goldmine in one beautifully designed package - "Curious George Takes a Job," "Curious George Rides a Bike," "Curious George Gets a Medal," "Curious George Flies a Kite," "Curious George Learns the Alphabet," "Curious George Goes to the Hospital."

Written and illustrated by Jan Brett, "Annie and the Wild Animals" (Houghton Mifflin, $11.95) is a beautifully produced book whose subject matter is about a little girl and her wild animal adventures.

From Harcourt comes a slew of children's books of all types: "Satchel Paige Don't Look Back" by David A. Adler ($16.00, 32 pages) for ages 5-8, "I Went Walking" by Sue Williams ($10.95, lap-sized board book) for ages six months to three years, "Baby Bear's Books" by Jane Yolen ($16.00, 40 pages) ages 2 to 5, and "Eating the Alphabet" by Lois Ehlert ($10.95, 28 pages) for ages six months to 3 years). All are simply sublime experiences for children and those who watch over them.

The Satchel Paige book is an educational and inspirational product on one of the great pitchers of all time -too long barred from big league baseball because of the color barrier. "I went Walking" is a bi-lingual treat - English and Spanish.

"Baby Bear's Books" celebrates and humanizes bears - a winning tiny tome. "Eating the Alphabet" is all about vegetables and fruits from A to Z, simply special!

All these solidly produced books are for reading, for savoring, and for keeping.  Delightful, highly appealing.
