"Friendly Fire & "The Given Day" - Special Reads

Book Review

For gift giving for yourself or for others "Friendly Fire" by A. B. Yehoshua (Harcourt, $26.00, 386 pages) and "The Given Day" by

Dennis Lehane (Morrow, $27.95, 704 pages) total more than a thousand pages of terrific reading and bring one to other worlds, other people, other times.
Yet, both books are universal in their humanity and impact, skillfully plotted and written by two men at the top of their game.
"Friendly Fire" is delivered in short parallel chapters by one of Israel's foremost novelists. It is a masterpiece of life in Israel in all its paradoxes, resentments, remembrances. The title of the book refers to a soldier killed six years before by "friendly fire" in the West Bank,  just one part of the interconnecting probing of age old mysteries of the human condition. MOST NOTABLE
"The Given Day" set in 1918 Boston is historical writing as good as it gets. There is a cast of characters who range from Babe Ruth to Jack Reed to Calvin Coolidge to Eugene O'Neill to John Hoover who will become Jay Edgar Hoover to Danny Coughlin, son of police legend Captain Thomas Coughlin - and issues and events like the Spanish Flu pandemic, and radicals up to no good, and graft and corruptions.  Gripping, filled with memorable scenes and characters, this is a book for an old fashioned reading experience.
