“Gertrude Jekyll and the Country House Garden” and "The Information A History, a  Theory, a Flood”

Book Review

Al kinds of books by all kinds of publishers covering all different types of subject matter for all kinds of readers keep readers busy with a dazzling range of choices. Herewith, a few cases in point.

“Gertrude Jekyll and the Country House Garden” by  Judith B. Tankard (Rizzoli, $45.00, 192 pages, 147 b&w & 51 color illustrations) is a wondrous work paying tribute to the work of the woman who laid the foundation for the modern garden design. The book contains of treasure trove of text and images showcasing and explaining the more than 350 gardens created by Jekyll taken as the title’s sub-text notes: “From the Archives of Country Life.”  A GEM.

"The Information A History, a  Theory, a Flood” by James Gleick (Pantheon, $29.95, 526 pages) is a mother lode of fascinating and often ground breaking data and content. Its primary thesis argues that the information we use and receive has become today's vital principle. Gleick, author of the highly acclaimed "Chaos" and "Genius" has done it again in this mighty   and all encompassing masterwork. MOST NOTABLE.

Also from Rizzoli/Universe is "Film isms...Understanding Cinema" by Ronald Bergan ($16.95, 160 pages). It is a slim, succinct, sophisticated tome that functions as a primer on film. Bergan knows his stuff and shows it off in this
book that is part guide, part encyclopedia, part history. A WINNING EFFORT.
