Holiday Sporting Reads 2005 - (Part 2)
For those on your special list or for your own pleasure
as a reader and sports fan - there are many worthy books out there to
reach out for as 2005 comes in a rush to its end. The following batch
is worth going out of your way for.
"Super Bowl" An Official Retrospective" by Rare Air Ltd (Ballantine,
$35.00, 216 pages) is geared to the 40th anniversary of the NFL's
cultural and sporting zenith. Coffee table in size, wide ranging in
scope, filled with magical moments and comments from such as Joe Namath,
Terry Bradshaw, Bart Starr, etc, - it is a book packager's touchdown.
Of related interest but on not as grand a scale is" From Sandlots to the
Super Bowl" by Craig R. Coenen (University of Tennessee Press, 342
pages). The book is a wonder as its fills in so much of the "shadow
history" of the league - the five decades before the first Super Bowl in
1967. For serious fans and history buffs - highly recommended.
"Geno: In Pursuit of Perfection" by Geno Auriemma with Jackie MacMullan
(Warner, $25.95, 316 pages) is a book to savor. Carefully crafted by the
gifted Jackie MacMullan, we are there with "Geno" in his growing up
(poor) years in his native Italy through his rise and successes as the
head coach of women's basketball at the University of Connecticut.
Inspiring, intriguing, highly interesting, this is a very classy sports
From Abrams Publishers comes "The Way of the Snowboarder by Rob Reed
($29.95,192 pages) with 160 full color illustrations. For all those with
an avid interest in the wintry sport and for those who would like to
learn a great deal about it - - this is the book for you. The whole
history of the sport, insights into its nuances, and terrific images
bringing the ice sport up close and personal all are here.
Another superb entry in the growing list of "beautiful" books is
"Golf's Golden Age" by Rand Jerris, et al ( National Geographic, $45.00,
656 pages). The book's press release calls it "monumental in scope"
which might be a bit of hyperbole, but "Golf's Golden Age" has a lot
going for it - the photography of George S. Pietzcker especially.
And for the hot stove baseballers out there - required reading is "The
Hardball Times Baseball Annual 2006" ($17.95, 334 pages) insights and
asides, observations and facts, cutting edge stats and analysis and
(would you believe) more.
HIGHLY NOTABLE: If you are a baseball card collector, or just a fan of
the game and want a unique experience - - "Jewish Major Leaguers 2006
Update Edition" is a must. Current players, career leaders, all-time
roster, women players, historic firsts and more - just some of the
subject matter of these attractive and almost too good for flipping
cards. A $35.00 check sent to Jewish Major Leaguers 104 Greenlawn
Avenue, Newton Massachusetts, 02459 will get you a set of these
extraordinary baseball cards.
