||Chef Michael Foley has transformed this new eatery into a popular local hangout for an after-work clientele. Whether you come for dinner or for drinks, the Vault Bistro and Wine Bar has a variety of menu items to choose from.
Known, obviously, for its extensive wine list, there was not an empty seat open at the enormous bar, which spanned the length of the restaurant on a Tuesday night. The Vault does not offer a separate dining area from the bar so the room did become quite loud at times.
Our server was attentive but not overly friendly. Even though she made some suggestions for appetizers, we had to ask for more water twice before she brought some over to us.
The entrees more than made up for the service. We selected the sautéed lobster atop saffron risotto with roasted vegetables topped with a lobster brie sauce ($32). The large chunks of already-cracked lobster arrived fresh and had a wonderfully light creamy sauce.
The oven-roasted monkfish ($23) was also a smash. Wrapped in spinach and bacon, this fresh fish was seasoned in a tomato clam broth.
Other entrees that looked appealing were the "duck in a basket" ($27),
"coq au vin" chicken casserole ($19) and seared pork tenderloin ($21). The prices here range from $19 to $32 for entrees and from $7 to $18 for appetizers.
We also ordered the forest mushroom ravioli in garlic cream ($10). If you like garlic, this is the appetizer of choice. The steamed crab won ton ($11) was a bit of a disappointment. Served in a spicy tomato consommé, there was only one small won ton to be shared between two guests.
Desserts here were a success. The chocolate cake and cheesecake were rich and heavenly.
Located right in the heart of Boston's financial district, the Vault Bistro and Wine Bar will surely be a success for the after-work crowd. It is the perfect place to grab a quick drink or eat a light meal.
